Enviro NZ's tips to recycle, re-use and refuse this season

Now that the gifts have been shared and the family memories made, why not consider the environment as you clean up for the new year? Let's start with the tree!

  • Don't toss your live tree in the kerbside bin. Instead, check with your local Christmas tree farm and turn into mulch or compost.

  • Before you buy your tree (or for next year), ensure they practice eco-friendly disposal.

  • Call your local transfer station to make sure they accept trees. You can check with your local council or search our facilities: https://environz.co.nz/facilities

  • Why not consider a live potted tree (or one made of rosemary like this one) that you can care for and decorate every year?

  • Or make arrangements from leftover tree branches like this one?

  • If you do have a non-living tree that you don't need anymore, you can re-gift to a local hospital, retirement home or charity opp shop.

What about the rest of your holiday leftovers? Cards that are paper only can be recycled. If they have batteries, glitter, non-paper embellishments or glitter cannot be recycled. Try to re-use and remake into cards, gift tags or ornaments for next year.

The same with wrapping paper. If there is any glitter on the paper, please don't put into the recycle bin. LED string lights cannot be recycled. You can regift them or take to repair cafe. If they cannot be fixed, they go into the rubbish bin. It's a potential hazard if they are tossed into the recycling bin.

Lastly, break down your cardboard boxes for recycling. AND...soft plastics can be recycled at your local supermarket -- not in your home recycling bin.

Every little thing we do to be more gentle with the earth makes an impact. And that's something celebrate everyday!
