Have you ever thought of using plastic lids for art?
Rowan, our Waste Minimisation & Education Advisor out of Dunedin has! If you visit the Dunedin landfill, you'll see this work of art.
Rowan was inspired by another in town, so he contacted the Connections Activity Centre, a community day centre provider that offers activities for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, to help sort all the lids.
He then sourced the timber off-cuts (aka panels) from the Cook Brothers’ workshop. Andy from Cook Brothers also helped with the install.
Rowan then brought the project to Southern Youth Development and the kids on the holiday programme worked on it over the school holidays.
His son also chipped in to help finish this masterpiece.
And if you are wondering about the lids...most of the bottle lids used (mostly milk/juice and Coke bottle-type bottles lids) are made of HDPE (plastic #2). He tried to avoid
using plastic lids of other plastics, as HDPE is more UV resistant that the other plastic types, so the lids should be able to withstand the
elements and UV better.
You can see this (and other upcycled projects) at the Green Island landfill and Resource Recovery Park at 9 Brighton Road,
Green Island (opposite Burgess Street).
