Hard-to-recycle product solutions
Some plastics and packaging just can’t be recycled the usual way. Instead of sending them to landfill, we now have a better option. At our Pōkeno site, take those hard-to-deal-with materials and turn them into Process Engineered Fuel (PEF), a reliable, consistent fuel that’s already powering cement kilns as an alternative to imported coal. It’s a practical step forward: cutting waste, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, and giving materials a second life. Together, we can keep thousands of tonnes of unrecyclable plastics and other recoverable materials out of landfill every year. It’s a simple, immediate way to shrink your footprint while supporting a more sustainable energy source for New Zealand.
What is Process Engineered Fuel (PEF)?
Process Engineered Fuel (PEF) is a fuel source we create from recoverable waste that can’t be recycled in New Zealand. Things like mixed plastics, certain packaging, textiles, and even manufacturing by-products like plastic purgings. Instead of sending these materials to landfill, we convert them into a consistent, reliable energy source for industry, designed to replace imported coal.
How it works
We identify and collect unrecyclable materials, then process and blend them using world-leading technology. The end result is a stable, homogeneous fuel that meets strict quality standards— making it a dependable alternative for energy-intensive industries like cement production and power generation.
Why PEF?
- Waste reduction – diverts thousands of tonnes of residual waste away from landfill.
- Coal replacement – provides a sustainable, local alternative to imported fossil fuels.
- Lower emissions – reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to coal and gas.
- Better reporting – helps businesses hit their waste reduction targets and demonstrate measurable waste-to-energy outcomes.
Why partner with us?

No one else in New Zealand can offer this
We’re the first to turn unrecyclable materials into a consistent fuel source that replaces imported coal.

We make it simple
Residual unrecyclable waste is tricky. We take the guesswork out, giving you a clear and responsible solution.

We’re a New Zealand First
No one else in the country can offer this service. Our PEF plant is the first of its kind here, giving local businesses a practical, homegrown way to deal with unrecyclable plastics and other residual materials.

We help you hit your targets
Turning unrecyclable residual waste into fuel counts towards your waste diversion goals. Instead of sending it to landfill, you’ll have solid stats to show how much material has been recovered and put back to use through waste-to-energy conversion.

We’re trusted
From Health NZ’s expired face masks, to Nexans’ power cable casings, to the Motor Trade Association’s plastic bumpers — we’re already working with organisations who care about doing the right thing.

We do it right
Our fuel is designed for high-temperature industries like cement kilns. With strict environmental checks in place, you can be sure it’s safe, compliant, and effective.
How can we support your business?
If you’re dealing with plastics or packaging that can’t go in the recycling stream, we can take them. Things like:
- Plasticised products that are out of spec, un-recyclable, obsolete or damaged
- Plastic extrusion purging's
- Manufacturing processing waste
- Multi layered packaging
- Labels and label backing
- Mixed plastic products
- Textiles
- Rolls of film
- Car Bumpers
- Clean PPE
- Woven polypropylene bags (like flexible skip bags)
- Cap seals/Wadding and off cuts
- Un-stickered corflute
- PET strapping around pallets
- Product protection wrapping
- And other applicable materials
No matter your size, as long as it is high calorific value, low moisture and high biogenic content we can tailor a service that takes those problem materials off your hands and puts them to better use. If you are not sure, then get in touch.
